01: Old Country Road

Been walking down an old country road
Passed the last town about an hour ago
Someone stopped, but I turned down the ride
It's a fine day, think I'll take it in stride
Take my time, maybe see what I'll find as I go
Walking down this old country road

There's a hundred birds on an overhead wire
Singing out their hearts like a Sunday choir
A warm wind's blowing o'er the farmer's field
Roses blooming on a wagon wheel
A long-legged foal's kicking up its heels so high
How sweet it is to be alive

Some folks in a passing car just stare
Those long faces, I've seen myself there
Things we don't feel when we're moving too fast
Times when it seems like the good days have past
Roll up the window and step on the gas to get away
It doesn't have to be that way

So here's a little thought to keep on your mind
If it seems the stars may have been unkind
And the world is spinning out of control
This pedal-to-the-metal life is draining your soul
If it all comes down, there's a place I know where we can go
Walking down an old country road

When it all comes down, there's a place I know where we can go
Walking down an old country road

02: Soft Wind Rising

The light on the hills now is fading
Out on the plains all is still
As we gather tonight it's a soft wind rising
To chase off the evening chill

And how I have longed for the touch of your hand
The sparkle in your eyes and your smile
For today I've promised to be your man
And stand by you all the while

Chorus:
All I want is to hold you tonight
To feel you close and warm
I can't imagine what I've done so right
To find myself in your arms

Now it's a long time that I have been waiting
For true love is so hard to find
But I've never in my life been more certain
Only you could ever be so kind
(Chorus)

There are times when it seems the hours fly past
Times when it seems time stands still
As here in this moment together at last
And all of our dreams fulfilled
(Chorus)

I can't imagine what I've done so right
Now that you're here in my arms

03: Seven Crows

Well, there was a girl that I used to know
And for a time our love did grow
Until one day she said goodbye
She went away and I never knew why

Chorus:
Seven crows high in a tree
Seven roads that wind to the sea
Seven ways a heart can deceive
Seven days, will she come back to me

Sometimes the sun shines, sometimes it rains
Sometimes the day brings pleasure or pain
Sometimes a flower gets buried in the snow
To bloom again when the spring breezes blow
(Chorus)

Now I got a letter one fine day
And read these words she had to say
"Since I've been gone I have missed you so
Would you take me back, could you let me know"
(Chorus)

Seven ways a heart can believe
Seven days 'til she comes back to me

04: Cold Beans

Well, you know I've been traveling that long dusty road
Hungry for her cooking as I'm coming home
Cold beans, cold beans there in a can
No, don't think I need to tell you, that's no way to please a man

Now I come to her gate with a sigh of relief
Step through the door, but what I see I can't believe
Cold beans, cold beans there in a can
No, don't think I need to tell you, that's no way to please a man

You used to make my supper, keep it hot
Spicy jambalaya steam'n in the pot
I tried to be your good man, won't you tell me please
Cold beans on the table, just what does it mean

Now she said she went shopping, I must wonder for what
'Cause it looks like cold beans are all that she bought
Cold beans, cold beans there in a can
No, don't think I need to tell you, that's no way to please a man

Just give me meat and potato, some sweet cherry pie
A little cream for my coffee, that'd be more to my liking
Than beans, cold beans there in a can
No, don't think I need to tell you, that's no way to please a man

Don't need to tell you, that's no way to please a man

05: Home in the Hills

It's a Friday night, the street lights are bright
The young folks are having their fun
But I'm just passing through, and looking to rest
Now the day's work is done

On the outskirts of town my thoughts do stray
To a place far away that I know
When the days hit hard and the nights get long
It's there my heart does go

Chorus:
Where the coyote's lullabies sing me to sleep
My true love waits for me still
There's nowhere on earth that I'd rather be
Than my sweet little home in the hills
My sweet little home in the hills

As the big trucks roll by this fleabag motel
I'm carried away in my dreams
Spirited back to that forest so deep
Those fields that grow so green
(Chorus)

It's a journey so long that keeps going on
And nobody knows where it ends
But I swear this day I will find my way
Back to those hills again
(Chorus)

06: If You Only Knew

I saw you in the city from the corner of my eye
I heard you calling out my name as I went passing by
But I must have been mistaken, for when I spun around
Where I thought you might be waiting there was no one to be found

Chorus:
It seems I'm always dreaming, no matter what the time
Wherever I might wander you're always on my mind
If I could only reach out to find you there somehow
If you only knew how much I'd like to be with you right now

Now, I've seen you in the mountains up where the high clouds pass
Your fragrance fills the meadow when the breeze moves through the grass
And I feel your arms around me every time I take a breath
Won't you let your love surround me, and give this poor heart some rest
(Chorus)

07: Shades of Gray

Shades of moonlight on the midnight grass
Shades of meaning as the hours pass
Baby did you tell me what you really meant to say
You know I've been out wandering around in those shades of gray

My heart is aching,  I can't think straight
I'm beginning to wonder might be something I ate
Some kind of trouble, but it just won't go away
Everywhere that I look I just see those old shades of gray

True love, they say, can make you dance and sing
Oh, what joy a little love might bring
But it seems I'm dangling here on that string
I'm upside down and don't feel a thing

Shades of moonlight on the midnight grass
Shades of meaning as the hours pass
Baby did you tell me what you really meant to say
You know I've been out wandering around in those shades of gray

08: Company of Friends

To a mother's heart and a father's care
Of the clay that formed when Time began
We are carried forth by all who came before
To be born into the company of friends
The company of friends, the company of friends
We are born into the company of friends

Now it's true I swear, on the joy we share
And the moments together that we spend
That in all our time there is none so fine
As when we're held in the company of friends
The company of friends, the company of friends
When we're held in the company of friends

Some are here, some are gone, some have long passed on
In one great family without end
Whether near or far, no matter where we are
We are blessed by the company of friends
The company of friends, the company of friends
We are blessed by the company of friends

And when the sky turns grey and we seem to lose our way
And there's trouble waiting just around the bend
It is there we'll find a love so kind
And sure, in the company of friends.
The company of friends, the company of friends
There is love in the company of friends

And when at last, our days on Earth are o'er
And this long journey comes to an end
May we lift our eyes and look to the light
And rise in the company of friends.
The company of friends, the company of friends
May we rise in the company of friends

09: The Last Dream

There's a wild herd of moonbeams weaving through the windowpanes
Chasing the storm clouds that brought the evening rain
While a host of dark shadows bear witness to the night
And I've been wandering in my last dream here before the morning light

I've been drinking holy water from a clear desert stream
And dancing in high meadows where the earth and heaven meet
Chanting prayers in the forest beneath a starry sky
And I've been dreaming my last dream as the world goes by

There once was a time they say we walked in Paradise
And our dreams were not forgotten when we opened our eyes
But somewhere in the darkness it seems we let them slip away
And left behind our last dream in the early morning gray

Now our long arms are reaching so deeply underground
And it must make God weary to watch the sea turn brown
A thousand miles from midnight where it's just sticks and bone
Will we think of that last dream on our long journey home

Now the storm clouds have scattered, the shadows all have gone
While outside a noisy raven calls to the rosy dawn
He's come to steal my slumber, but try as he may
I will hold on to this last dream until the end of my days
Lord help us dream again one last dream, before it's too late, before it's too late

10: Equinox

How easy it goes, like a leaf on a light autumn breeze
How deeply it flows, like a river bound to the sea

How patient the seed, that silently waits for the rain
How precious the dream, calling us back home again

Here in the dark, the sound of the gathering wind
Stirring our hearts, with memories of where we have been

How sweet is the night, that carries our voices in song
How brilliant the light, of the darkness that brings on the dawn

Come to us now, and guide us along the way
Come show us how, to walk here in truth this day

Fountain of the heart, ocean of mystery
Teach us our part, that we may all live in peace

How easy it goes, like a leaf on a light autumn breeze
How deeply it flows, like a river bound to the sea

11: Whisky and Me

So here's what it is between whisky and me
The chant of a hoot-owl down by the creek
The rolling of thunder when it's too dark to see
That's what it is between whisky and me

And joy's a young woman with a heart in full bloom
Whose affections may change like the phase of the moon
While sorrow's a child of sweet memories
That's what it is between whisky and me

There are days I soar like a falcon
But mostly I crawl on dry land
Who cares if anyone's counting
I'm doing the best I can

Far overhead the stars shining bright
Are keeping me company here in the night
Out there in the silence wandering free
That's what it is between whisky and me

Yeah, that's what it is between whisky and me
